Born on the South Islands West Coast in 1951 from sturdy coal mining stock, Gary started work in the law courts and then went on to attend University of Canterbury gaining a Bachelor or Commerce in 1972. He was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand in 1974 and made a fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) in 1996.

Gary has been a partner in public practice since 1976 and he has wide ranging business skills relevant to many industry sectors and specialises in; business development, strategy, finance, trusts, structures and ad hoc consultative work. Gary enjoys the people aspect of his work and is an accomplished presenter, mentor and motivator. He holds several directorships and particularly enjoys the strategic analysis and governance aspects of these.

He was admitted as an Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors in 2010.

On a more personal note, Gary's interests are golf, reading, travel and is an avid rugby and netball enthusiast. Married to Anne Marie, a New Zealand  National Umpire examiner with three daughters, Gary admits to watching the odd game of netball and proudly supports both the All Blacks and Silver Ferns, (and of course, Crusaders & Canterbury Tactics).
