If you’ve looked out at the ever-changing cityscapes across Canterbury or Otago recently, there is a good chance you are admiring the structural handiwork of Francis Ward Ltd (FWL). Specialising in structural concrete, Adam Ward and Regan Howley have established themselves as trusted leaders in the sector, expertly delivering everything from multi-unit residential developments to complex commercial projects.
Francis Ward Ltd was recently thrust into the national spotlight during their involvement with Christchurch’s landmark One New Zealand Stadium development. Spending over three years on-site across multiple stages of the build, FWL spearheaded the foundational substructure, technical in situ walls, and expansive superstructure packages. It was a monumental undertaking that saw the team pour an astonishing 25,954 cubic metres of concrete into the foundations in a tight seven-month window. This earned them the 2023 Commercial Project of the Year at the NZ Concrete Contractors Awards, alongside a Canterbury record for the highest volume of concrete poured on a single project within a month. “It was an impressive project to be a part of,” Adam said. “Everyone was pretty happy to be part of building something that the city had been without for so long.”
Established in 2012, the business initially focused on demolition and localised site works after the Christchurch earthquakes. But the company quickly identified a growing demand for specialised expertise, pivoting the company towards concrete construction. Today, as the firm approaches its 15th anniversary next year, FWL has a highly experienced workforce of over 50 staff spread across their regional offices.
When asked about the secret behind their enduring growth and outstanding reputation, Adam credits early collaboration and a solid team culture. “We generally like to get involved early in a project’s lifecycle,” Adam explained. “It allows us to assist clients with pricing capacity, constructability assessments, and specific methodologies before the work begins.” Once boots are on the ground, it’s their team dynamic that ensures success. “Our internal culture embraces the latest industry technology, but we keep a down-to-earth, hands-on approach from senior management right through to our site teams. We work hard, but have fun while we’re doing it.”
Navigating a multi-regional footprint and major commercial contracts requires robust corporate oversight, which is why FWL teamed up with Leech & Partners over a decade ago. FWL trusts Leech & Partners for macro-level financial clarity, long-term planning, and strategic governance. Working closely with Chris Smith and his team, Adam values the firm’s approachable, practical style. “Chris is great to deal with,” Adam said. “He’s exceptionally down to earth and truly understands the mechanics of how our business operates.”
