Directors

Chris Smith

Director, BCom, CA

Chris Smith

Chris is a Cantabrian, educated at Christ’s College and awarded his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury. After one year as a graduate accountant working in the Auckland CBD, the appeal of working in Christchurch’s ‘Big Four’ accounting firm environment called him home.

Chris became a qualified Chartered Accountant in 2003, and joined Leech & Partners three years later. In 2014, he was made Director. Although Chris has several years of focused Agribusiness experience, the commercial sector is his specialty area. He is a wealth of knowledge in the fields of business valuations and due diligence with respect to business sales and purchases; and financial reporting requirements – including New Zealand equivalents of International Financial Reporting Standards, taxation research, management accounting, annual and periodic compliance.

Chris is married to Megan, who have two young children, Kelsey and Campbell. When he’s not escaping to the bach in Duvauchelle, Chris is a keen member of the Canterbury Jockey Club and enjoys a game of squash.

Glen White

Glen White

Originally from rural Ashburton, Glen joined Leech & Partners as a graduate in 1997 upon completion of a Bachelor of Commerce from Canterbury University. After completing his practical experience and professional exams, Glen was admitted to the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand and now holds a Certificate of Public Practice. In March 2001, Leech & Partners opened their Christchurch office. Glen was a founding staff member and soon after became a Shareholder of the Company and was appointed a Director.  Glen has developed a wide range of commercial clients providing business advisory  services including compliance work, management accounts, taxation advice and planning, budgeting, business appraisals, structuring and valuations.

Glen prides himself on providing a timely and hassle free service that builds strong, long-term relationships and allows client businesses to grow organically.

Outside work Glen and his wife Elle enjoy family time, keeping busy with their two children. Glen is also a keen cycler and avid rugby fan.

Jon Jarman

Jon Jarman

Jon joined Leech & Partners in early 2016, after 10 years working for other Chartered Accountancy firms in Canterbury. He comes from a farming background and still enjoys helping out on the family farm near Darfield. He is responsible for a broad range of business services from the basics of annual financial statements and taxation returns, through to cash flow forecasting, budgeting and profit improvement plans. His background gives him a particular interest in farm succession planning and land use conversion.

In his spare time Jon enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children, and getting out into the great outdoors.

Julie Inwood

Our Associate Director, Julie, is a familiar face to many clients and professionals and is well known for her personal and collaborative approach. Based in rural Mid Canterbury, since joining the Leech team over 20 years ago Julie has accumulated an enviable depth of experience and expertise in the primary and agri-business sectors, which sits alongside her extensive expertise in hospitality, manufacturing, construction, commercial and retail enterprises. She has a fervent interest in succession planning, governance and advisory work. Passionate about the town we live in, Julie is involved in several local advisory boards and groups where her expertise can be applied for the benefit and future proofing of the place we call home for the generations to come.

Trusted advisor, businesswoman, wife and mother, a ‘fixer’, a technician, an innovator and a motivator she is many things to many people.

Neil Donaldson

Neil Donaldson

Neil grew up in Ashburton and made the move to Christchurch to study Commerce at the University of Canterbury. He graduated in 1979, and was admitted to the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants that June. Having gained his degree and postgraduate In 1986 Neil joined the Leech team, making him one of our original members. Two years later he became a Partner and has never looked back. With over 40 years in the industry, he has generated a specialist skill set, and is your go-to man for business development, personal financial advisory services, taxation, GST, management accounting and farm accounting.

Outside of work, Neil is the proud founder member and treasurer of the Ashburton Aquatic Park committee, and makes sure he finds time for involvement in his passion for water skiing as the Chairman of the Lake Hood Water Ski Club and Canterbury Region. Neil enjoys competitive water skiing and competes at a local and national level. Neil and his wife Janeen have five children, and as a family enjoy water skiing, hockey, mountain biking, tramping, and given a chance he tinkers with fast remote-controlled cars, boats, planes and drones.

Nick Walls

Nick Walls

Nick became a Director and Shareholder of Leech & Partners in 2014 after joining in 2009. His previous experience saw him working in London and prior to this, for one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting practices in Christchurch. Specialising in Agribusiness, Nick deals with small and medium sized businesses. Having gained his degree and postgraduate degree at the University of Canterbury, he was admitted to Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand as a Chartered Accountant in 2006.

Nick spent his formative years on the family farm in Mid Canterbury and his passion for New Zealand agriculture helped establish his grass roots approach to assisting clients grow and develop their businesses. Nick balances this passion with a commercial client base and deals in all aspects of accounting, tax compliance, budgeting and forecasting, management accounting and has a particular interest in succession planning and governance.

Aside from client advisory work, Nick holds governance roles outside of the firm including Akaroa Health Ltd, Merivale Podiatry (2019) Ltd, the Canterbury A&P Association and his local boating club in French Farm, Akaroa.

Away from work, Nick and his wife Sophie enjoy all that the Banks Peninsula area has to offer, spending weekends in the Akaroa area boating. While in the winter you can find them enjoying skiing or travelling.

Adrienne McLeod

Adrienne McLeod

Adrienne joined us in July of 2018. Before that, she had worked for BDO for six years and had been working in C.A. firms since the ’90s. Accounting is her ‘second career’ having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1998 after completing a Commerce Degree while studying part-time at Canterbury and working full time. Before that, she completed a Horticultural Science degree at Lincoln College and worked as a horticultural consultant with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Adrienne provides compliance and advisory services and works with a wide range of businesses, including commercial and farming from the start-up stage through to sale and retirement. She’s always prepared and can communicate technical and financial information in lay terms to assist business owners in their decision making and planning.

‘Outside of work, I am a keen tramper and enjoy spending time in the outdoors with my family and the friends we have made from the various tramping/caving/climbing clubs we belong to.’ 

Annette Burgess

Annette has been with Leech and Partners as client manager since 2007. Always happy to assist with any task big or small, she puts her BCM Dip FM Grad Cert Com to good use being instrumental in the preparation of annual financial statements, tax return and GST returns.

When not at work, she enjoys going ‘off the beaten path’ on short backpacking adventures and puts her hand up when volunteers are needed in our local community.

Ange Cook

Ange always has time to get to know her clients aiming to understand their business and the needs associated. Once she has formed a bridge of
comprehension and trust, and only then, does she tailor advice to suit those needs.

She joined us in 2017, and holds a Bachelor of Commerce. After graduating from Canterbury University, Ange went on to work for one of the ‘Big Four’
accounting firms, and also gained experience working as a Management Accountant in the commercial sector.

In her role at Leech and Partners, she is responsible for a range of business services for commercial clients ranging from annual financial statements
and taxation returns, through to forecasting and budgeting.

‘In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband, young daughter and husky dog, and going for walks around Canterbury.’

Ben Davidson

Ben Davidson

Ben is well known for his focus. Our clients know their work is in the hands of a details oriented individual when Ben is managing their tax compliance, periodic reporting and various needs unique to their situation.

He joined us in 2012, already a fully qualified Chartered Accountant with an impressive resume, and has been an energetic, helpful and conscientious member of our team ever since.

Before joining us in 2002, Brett worked in the forestry and Advertising Industries.

‘I enjoy working with my clients, being helpful, and going the extra mile.’

Having held and a BCom and C.A. for over forty years, Brett’s experience offers a myriad of benefits for our clients in his role as liaison to them.

When not at work, Brett loves spending time with family and at the family bach. As well as fishing and gardening.

Nicola Gibson

Nicola Gibson

Nicola joined us in 2003, having worked previously with a mostly farming based accounting practice in Eltham, Taranaki. She was there for two and a half years during which time she studied via correspondence to complete her N.Z. Diploma in Business.

Her role is wide and varied from workflow management, in house training, review work, operational matters and all other matters incidental, with a handful of clients.

‘I pride myself on accuracy and thoroughness, and enjoy helping people become the best they can be, and I care a great deal about the future of Leech & Partners.’

Hanging out with my three children and husband is her favourite activity outside work hours and getting involved with the kids sports such as tennis — gardening, handcrafts, shopping, watching movies, and generally being creative.

Jenny has been in the industry since the turn of the century. She holds a Bachelors in Business and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

She brings a wealth of experience to her role as a client manager for Leech and Partners. She is known for being helpful, amenable and enjoying working with our clients.

‘When I’m not at work, I’m often on my bike. I love competitive cycling & mountain biking, and in between the pedalling, you’ll find me reading.’

Karen understands the land and speaks the same language as our agrarian focused clients. She has a Bachelor of Science from Lincoln as well as P.D. Dip Viticulture & Oenology, P.G. Dip Teaching & Learning, BCOM, CA. Suffice to say, she is eminently qualified.

The secret behind her drive and determination?
‘I’m a big believer in drinking coffee.’

When not bringing her wealth of expertise to drive strategies around our clients’ accounting needs, she can be found in the hills on her mountain bike.

A hard-working team player, who goes the extra mile, Tania joined the Leech and Partners team at the beginning of 2009. She has earned a Bachelor of Commerce and is a Provisional Member of NZICA.

‘I believe in always having a smile on my face regardless of circumstances.’

When not preparing accounts for clients, outside of work, she likes spending time with her children and family.

Kim Flintoft

Kim Flintoft

A conscientious and dedicated individual, who is happy to help at any time, Kim joined Leech and Partners in 2003. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Management from Lincoln and has worked with milk producers, vets and even N.Z. Post.

‘My core role is to help my clients. This might include account preparation, GST or anything else they may require on any given day.’

When not helping Leech and Partners clients add value, she likes walking, playing squash, and socialising with friends.

Krystal Armstrong

Krystal Armstrong

Krystal joined us in August 2011, having worked for Westpac before that. She has a Diploma in Accounting and assists clients with any of their accounts needs, both compliance and ad-hoc.

A loyal team player, who is approachable and has excellent attention to detail, Krystal is willing to give anything a go and has a positive attitude.

‘Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, playing water sports, watching movies, and am partial to a good glass of wine.’

Marie Riley

Marie Riley

Marie’s strength is in compliance, ensuring GST and tax is reported correctly on time. She joined our team in 2016 and holds a Bachelor of Commerce.

Annual returns and GST are no match for her extensive knowledge and strategic mindset.

‘I had multiple part-time jobs when I was younger. This has given me a broad appreciation of how hard our clients work. I bring this empathy to my role.’

When not hard at work, she can be found spending time with her family.

Ricky van Olphen

Ricky joined us midway through 2018. He’d been working with the New Zealand Racing Board and TaxRefunds.co.nz. He’s a qualified Accounting Technician with a Diploma in Accounting and a New Zealand Diploma in Business.

He has a crucial role, assisting clients with their accounting and taxation needs.

‘I enjoy working and collaborating in a team to provide value-adding services and innovative solutions to all clients.’

Beyond the office space, you find him playing rugby for New Brighton, playing/coaching Aussie Rules. Spending time with his girls, Jane and Sophie, as well as enjoying time with friends.

Scott Mathieson

Scott Mathieson

Scott has a genuine appreciation for the concerns and needs of our rural clients. He was at one time a sheep farmer himself.

That was then, now he holds a Bachelor of Commerce, having majored in accounting. Scott joined us recently to help with annual accounts preparation, GST processing, and agricultural accounting services.

‘I aim to meet client needs in a timely fashion. Working with them to find the best solutions to their accounting problems.’

Outside work hours he’s a very busy man, engaging in rugby for Burnside, basketball, touch, hunting, fishing, and free diving.

Emma McIntyre

Our Front Of House specialist since 2017, Emma is one of those people that you like to meet, repeatedly. Always ready with a smile, and a consummate team player, she holds a Bachelor of Arts Majoring in Psychology.

‘My passion is keeping fit and active, so I spend most of my spare time in the gym and compete in Olympic Weightlifting. I also enjoy playing with my dog and going out for coffee.’

At Leech and Partners, her roles include taking care of the reception desk, answering phones and helping out with anything else that will keep the business running smoothly.

Before Leech and Partners, Janine was part of the Solid Energy legal team. All about getting the job done, her extensive list of roles includes: finalising accounts and letters to go to clients after work has been completed. Typing minutes for the various Boards upon which our Directors sit. AML/CFT compliance. Companies Office updates and Annual Returns, Shares Transfer, incorporating companies.

‘I’m making sure the Christchurch office runs smoothly. Being available for any staff member that needs help.’

Janine has been us since 2014 and holds a Diploma of Business Studies from Christchurch polytechnic.

Outside of work, she enjoys being at home on her lifestyle block, spending time with family and friends, and having the occasional glass of wine.

Anna Calder

Having a rural background, Anna relates to and communicates with rural clients in a way that they understand, and that helps them achieve their desired goals. She helps us with the preparation of annual accounts and taxation statements.

Anna has a Bachelor of Commerce from Otago University majoring in accounting Post Graduate Diploma in Commerce from Lincoln University majoring in agri-business. Before joining Leech and Partners in May 2018, she had worked for another local, rural-focused accounting firm and a medium-sized commercial and agricultural focused accounting firm in Invercargill.

‘I love spending time with family & friends, getting outdoors, horse riding & mentoring youth through various roles in local voluntary organisations.’

Bella joined our team earlier this year as a new graduate. Before that, she worked as a supervisor at Millennium Hotels and Resorts. She brings with her a Bachelor of Commerce Majoring in Accounting and Finance from Otago University.

‘I help prepare GST and tax returns for clients while working alongside my ‘buddies’ who help train and guide me.’

Bella is conscientious and highly focused. In her own time, she likes to go to the gym, hang out with friends, and go on adventures, which often include skiing and water skiing!

Chanaide Fulton

Chanaide Fulton

Before joining us in 2016, Chanaide was studying at Lincoln University. She has completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Finance is due to complete her Chartered Accountant studies soon.

Her key roles include preparation of tax returns and advising on opportunities for operational improvements. Plus development and implementation of improved operational policies and processes.

‘I aim to understand the accounting challenges faced by clients and provide supportive training to enhance their financial abilities.’

Outside of work, she makes the most of our great outdoors with interests in trail running, water skiing and fishing. Chanaide also sits on the Central South Island Fish and Game council as an elected councillor and is a volunteered companion for Camp Quality Christchurch.

David Cockburn

David has been an integral part of the Leech and Partners team since 2004. Having taken care of our clients’ needs for more than a decade, David’s accounting competencies are well known amongst his peers. A firm believer in being on time, every time, he is known for being on hand to lend a hand.

‘When not at work, I like playing golf and travelling, and combining those two pursuits if possible.’

Before working with us, he was with Pyne Gould Guinness Limited, and before that Perpetual Trust Limited. This previous experience has proven invaluable for our client base.

Debbie Crawford

Debbie Crawford

Always the people person and ready to try something new, Debbie started her working career very young as the ‘after school assistant’ at Creek Road Garage. After that, she worked part-time as an accounting form while completing her studies.

With us since 2005, Debbie performs compilation and tax work, including budgets, GST, FBT, management accounts, In-house I.T. work, and whatever else is asked of her.

‘I enjoy a challenge, which helps me to tackle new and different types of jobs outside of the usual compilation work.’

When not compiling, and making light work of our clients’ tax, she enjoys reading, watching movies, and doing her Les Mills on demand workouts.

Georgia Goodman

Georgia Goodman

Georgia began her accounting career working for a firm in Nelson while she was studying. Bachelor of Commerce degree completed, she went overseas, joining a firm in London, working with several renewable energy companies.

Georgia joined us in January of this year and is currently working towards her Chartered Accountancy qualification.

‘I love working closely with our clients to get them set up and using Xero. Lots of client training sessions!’

Outside of work, she loves to travel! However, when that is not possible, you’ll find Georgia outdoors, hiking, training her dog, and helping on the farm.

Jane Pearce

Jane Pearce

With practical knowledge of farming and having excellent client communication skills, Jane is the ideal liaison to foster meaningful relationships between Leech and our clients, particularly with those that work the land.

Jane joined our team in 2018. She has a Bachelor of Business Studies and is a qualified C.A.

The epitome of an active person, Jane brings plenty of energy to her role at Leech and Partners.

Karlene Reid

Karleene joined us in 2000, having just completed her studies at Canterbury University. She holds a Diploma in Accounting, Finance & Information Systems (Dip AFIS), as well as a BCom.

A dedicated and experienced member of the accounting team, who prides herself in her work, she helps us with the preparation of annual financial statements and other accounting work for a mix of both farming and business clients.

When not at work, she is happiest spending time with friends and family.

‘You’ll find me chasing after, and being entertained by our three-year-old daughter Zoe, and making a mess in the kitchen.’

Kelly O’Neill

Driven by a desire to help people achieve more, Kelly has been one of the characters that have helped Leech and Partners form the cultural foundation upon which our business is built.

Fresh from her study in 1997, she joined our team and has never looked back since that day. She holds an N.Z. Diploma in business, and is an Accredited Chartered Accountant, working with business and farming clients concerning all areas of accounting.

‘I enjoy all aspects of accounting work and love helping people and working with people in general.’

Outside of work hours, she very much enjoys spending her time either walking, reading, or gardening.

Honesty, generosity and optimism are Michaels three keys to creating exceptional partnerships with our clients.

He looks after current financial and taxation operations and has been with Leech and Partners since 2004. Before that he worked for Perpetual Trust and PGG Limited.

Known for her practical knowledge and understanding of accounting and taxation and interpretation of financial reports, Natasha joined our team in 2008.

She engages in preparation of financial statement and tax returns for a range of clients from business and farming entities. As well as general tax compliance work for clients; GST Returns and FBT Returns.

‘I believe I bring critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and can build a strong relationship with clients.’

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and travelling the world.

Stephen Bradshaw

Stephen Bradshaw

A chartered accountant with a Bachelor of Commerce & Management from Lincoln, Stephen joined our team in 2004. Before that, he worked for Perpetual Trust.

He excels at formulating financial statements and tax returns for all types of clients, preparing GST and other tax returns.

‘I aim to be a team player, to be efficient, and to work well with clients.’

In his spare time, Stephen is a keen reader and model maker.

Tracey Keeley

Tracey Keeley

Before joining Leech and Partners, Tracey worked for a small accounting firm taking care of clients in the rural sector. Originally from South Otago, Tracey grew up on sheep and beef farm and moved to a cropping farm in Mid Canterbury by the Rangitata River.

‘I suppose you could say I fell into the work to be fair and found I was good at it. So, I’ve been drafting accounts, GST returns, and preparing tax returns now for twenty plus years.’

A qualified accounting technician with a New Zealand Diploma of Business, Tracey understands the ins and outs of farm life. Hands-on experience, working knowledge of rural life, and two decades of experience means she brings great empathy to her role working with our farming clients.

When she’s not at work, she can be found chasing around the countryside after her two children. During quieter moments, Tracey enjoys a good book.

Adelle Brown

Always willing to help and learn more, when Adelle isn’t looking after our accounts receivable/ payable, and keeping our database up to date, she can be found assisting partners and our accounting team as required with work overload/administration.

‘Depending on which of the partners you’re talking with, I’m either our Administration Assistant or Accounts Receivable/Payable person.’

She joined us in July 2002 having worked in the electronic security sector before that and is the friendly voice you often hear answering our phones at peak times. Outside of work, Adelle loves crafts, camping, as well as visiting friends and family out of town. 

Brooke Olsen

Ensuring that all of our clients’ employees are paid on time and correctly is a responsibility that requires great focus. Brooke approaches this task with supreme confidence, backed by competence.

A recent addition to our team, she is studying for a Bachelor in Business, majoring in Human Resource Management.

‘I love talking to new people and finding out about other life experiences.’

Outside of work, Brooke enjoys spending time with friends, doing a little personal shopping, as well as getting outdoors for hunting and hiking.

Gillian O’Conner

Having worked in the I.T. sector, local government, not for profit and aged care in a variety of accounting and administration roles, Gillian’s well-rounded experience is a real asset to our business.

With Leech and Partners since 2015, she specialises in projects that involve improving/updating our processes, internal productivity reporting, and being our AML/CFT Compliance Officer.

‘I like to challenge the way things are done, with a view to continuous improvement.’

When not at work, she can often be found spending time with family, reading, or working out at the gym.

Javanna Harris

Javanna Harris

In the first instance, Javanna was with us from Feb 1997 until Jan 2002. She then rejoined us in Aug 2007 and since then been managing all manner of tax matters for our clients.

‘I have patience and a sense of humour, both of which come in handy in this role.’

Outside of work, Javanna is an avid supporter of the Crusaders and the All Blacks and enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Tracy Maslin

Tracy Maslin

Whether it’s managing and processing payroll, liaising with clients concerning payroll and H.R. queries, or helping directors with human resources, you could not find a person better suited for the role.

‘I enjoy building strong relationships by being friendly and helping people efficiently.’

Tracy has been with us since 2011. Outside of work hours, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Wendy Mercer

Wendy Mercer

Wendy’s resume is a ‘who’s who’ of local and international business leaders. Names like the New Zealand Trade Development Board and Mair Astley, London indicate the depth of her experience.

Joining us in 2012, she has been our Front Of House champion, answering phones, typing, filing, scanning, greeting clients, preparing Minutes as well as arranging morning tea, lunches & afternoon teas.

‘I have a willingness to put my hand to anything, presenting a friendly manner to staff and clients, and assisting partners & staff were required.’

When not at work, she enjoys travel, theatre, gardening, reading, renovations, and designing landscapes.
