No Need to Tread Lightly on This Floor: How Dominion Flooring Has Stood the Test of Time

If you’re in Canterbury, chances are that you’ve heard of Dominion Flooring: the one-stop shop for flooring needs, both commercial and residential. Carpet, timber, vinyl—whatever you’re looking for, they’ve got it. They’ve installed flooring for high-end architectural homes through to hotels and high-density housing.

One recent success you may recognize is Te Pae, Christchurch’s Convention Centre. All the custom-designed carpets, carpet tiles, and vinyl were installed by Dominion Flooring. With over 24 meeting rooms and 2,800m² of exhibition space, you can imagine how large of an undertaking this was.

Part of this involved creating a custom carpet. “They didn’t simply want to pick an off-the-shelf carpet,” Sam Dore, Managing Director, explained. “So, we worked closely with the manufacturer and architect to develop and install a carpet that works well with the rest of the structure.”

Founded in 1947, there’s no doubt that Dominion Flooring is an intergenerational success. Sam’s grandfather was a flooring expert, and Sam’s father ran Dominion Flooring for years before handing the reins to Sam. Sam has now been leading the company for 12 years.

So, how do you ensure an enduring legacy’s success? Sam and his team believe it comes down to the knowledge and skill sets they’ve cultivated and handed down over the years, along with their strong focus on service and building long-lasting relationships with customers.

“Our success is largely due to the sheer amount of experience we’ve got and the in-depth knowledge that’s been passed down over the generations,” Sam said. “We’re problem solvers, good at thinking on our feet and coming up with efficient ways to approach jobs, and we love helping clients with whatever they need.” Dominion Flooring pride themselves on an acute awareness of customers’ needs and expectations, keeping up with the latest trends, and employing the best people to get the job done right.

Part of that includes working with competent and reliable accountants, which is why Dominion Flooring teamed up with Leech & Partners. Leech & Partners helps with everything from tax compliance to strategic advice, meeting with Sam and his team twice a year.

Having worked with Chris Smith, Sam has always found it great working with Leech & Partners. “Their team has similar mindsets to us and that valuable business focus,” Sam said. “There are so many facets to what we need in an accounting firm. Given the scale of our commercial projects that can run for years, we often see big waves of income and expenditure in the business, and Leech & Partners help us manage that and budget accordingly. And they’re always just a phone call away.”
